Classic Racing Motorcycle British Championship 2007

Round 1

Pembrey 7th & 8th April

With the winter finished and Team Cameron Racing having had a break from road racing it was off to the Welsh circuit of Pembrey for the 1st Round  of the Classic Motorcycle Club British Championships.

During the winter months the sidecar was stripped of every single nut and bolt plus all bearings. These were re-newed where needed and the outfit was re-built back to its race spec. The chassis was “jigged” and the team has manufactured an exact replica of the 2006 sidecar. This is the first of many CAMERON CHASSIS’S  and will be on circuit shortly.

Due to work commitments Rob and Andy did not get to test prior to their first championship round so it was in at the deep end for the duo.

Saturday 7th

No winter testing proved a shame as after some minor set-up adjustments in morning warm-up/training they had to retire from the first race whilst laying in a comfortable second position with a brake bind problem to the front end. This was sorted in minutes and the outfit was ready to race again.

The second race was “back to normal” for the flying BMW mounted team winning the race and setting ANOTHER lap record. Rob and Andy now hold 8 lap records and have only raced together for 10 meetings!

After the second race the sidecar was checked & prepared for the following days races, other modifications were made to aid more air flow to the mighty BMW motor as Rob had noted the engine oil temperature running a little too high in the Welsh sunshine.

Sunday 8th

The day started fine and dry with plenty of sun to heat the track surface.

Race one saw the team slot into a safe second position, staying a bikes length away from the leader Rob and Andy were happy and confident to stay there until later into the race when they planned to “turn the wick up” a little and hopefully snatch victory on the last lap. This unfortunately did not go to plan. The outfit was fitted with a brand new lighter weight fairing over the winter brake but it appears the air ducting to each cylinder of the BMW engine was not enough to cool the team’s race motor. Rob pulled the outfit from the race three quarters of the way through to prevent any major damage as the oil temperature had started to creep up and was getting to high.

It was decided by the team after inspecting the outfit in the pits to replicate the 2006 fairing / air ducting design exactly before the next outing at Lydden Hill Circuit in Kent. It was disappointing to start the season this way but the team felt it better to return to the workshop and make sure the airflow system is as per 2006.

A very big thank you to all sponsors and all who help and play a part in running this friendly team.
