Race of the Year
2006 7th / 8th October Croft Rob Cameron from West Kingsdown in Kent and energetic passenger Andy Smith won the Classic “Race of the Year” motorcycle races at the Croft race circuit near Darlington on 7th and 8th October. The pair having only teamed up together just 8 races ago for this seasons championships have set 7 new circuit lap records on board their immaculate BMW powered classic sidecar. The class that they race in has strict rules where-as the sidecar has to resemble that of a pre 1973 outfit. The engine fitted to the Team Cameron outfit was originally fitted to a BMW R Series road motorcycle. The teams weekend started with two race wins on Saturday, Cameron had not raced the Northern circuit for 8 years so a quick learning curve was soon established. The race result from Saturday’s first race gave the team instant pole position for the important “Race of the Year” on Sunday. A few laps practice on Sunday morning went as planned in readiness for the main race. Cameron and Smith did not get the start they were hoping for and took until 2 laps from the end of the race to gain their leading position. Once into first place heading the field there was no looking back for the spectacular three wheel drifting BMW mounted duo. They won the race by 16 seconds and set yet another new circuit lap record of 1 minute 40.7 being some 4 seconds faster than the previously held record. After the presentation of garlands Cameron said “It has been a great season for our team and we have all enjoyed every minute, it’s a shame we had some teething problems at the start of the season but you expect that after building a new outfit. I would like to thank all our sponsors and everyone involved”.
